The phrase "prasava" denotes giving birth to a child. Normal labor means giving birth to a baby without any kind of complications occurring in between. The term "Prasava Kala," which refers to the period of delivery, is a subject of debate in Ayurveda. According to Acharya Charaka the normal timing for delivery is after the nine to ten months of conception. According to Acharya Sushruta, the average gestation period might last up to twelve months. Today, a baby's birth is often expected to occur after nine months of pregnancy. If the expected labor does not happen, a C-section is carried out.

Ayurveda also clearly refers to a concept known as Sutikagara, which refers to the architecture of the place where the baby would be born. About eight hands long and four hands wide should be the approximate measurements of this place. The Sutikagara's door should face toward the east or the south. Ayurvedic scholars have also stated that the child's birthplace should contain an agni source (fire).

After the baby is born, there are a few guidelines that should be followed according to Ayurveda. Only following the placenta's removal is the mother referred to as a Sutika (woman in the postpartum phase). The well-known Ayurvedic scholars have talked about specific treatment plans. The following are some of the factors that have been discussed.

Sutika Paricharya refers to the care and a few guidelines that a mother who has just given birth should adhere to. It is advised that the mother wear a necklace made of a bead strung together. Trivita should be used to make the bead. Udara patta bandhan instructs the mother to bind a long silk shawl over her abdomen. The vitiated vata dosha in the abdominal region can be eliminated with the use of Udara patta bandhan. Continue regular abdominal massage a few days later.

During this time, the mother should control her emotions and refrain from engaging in any sexual activity.
