Ashwagandha – Another magic herb for health problems.

What is Ashwagandha?

India i.e. Bharat is the land where the holistic science of Ayurveda originated. It is intrinsically sanctified with Mother Nature’s goodness. Therapeutic herbs and spices are found growing in every nook and corner, whether we recognize them or not. In the present times, with most people follow a sedentary lifestyle, getting diagnosed with some problem or other is quite a common factor. However, be it stress, anxiety, digestive issues, pain and inflammation, heart problems, liver anomalies or skin diseases, these ayurvedic herbs provide an absolute remedy for most health anomalies. While some herbs, roots or leaves are already identified and are actively used for medicinal purposes, there are still a huge number of therapeutic plants that are yet to be discovered or not yet employed for their traditional healing properties.  One such herb is Ashwagandha.

Ashwagandha is an ancient medicinal herb. It’s classified as an adaptogen which means that it can help your body manage stress. Ashwagandha contains chemicals that might help calm the brain, reduce swelling, lower blood pressure, and alter the immune system. For hundreds of years, people have used the roots and orange-red fruit of ashwagandha for medicinal purposes. The herb is also known as Indian ginseng or winter cherry. The name “ashwagandha” describes the smell of its root, meaning “like a horse.” By definition, ashwa means horse. In Ayurvedic medicine, ashwagandha is considered a Rasayana. This means that it helps maintain youth, both mentally and physically.

What are the uses of using Ashwagandha?

  • For Anxiety – Ashwagandha is classified as an adaptogen which means that it helps the body to adapt to stress. It can boost brain function and help fight symptoms of anxiety and depression. Several controlled human studies have shown that this herb can reduce symptoms in people with stress and anxiety disorders.  It normalises the vata and pitta doshas in the body which in turn keeps the serotonin level under control and helps to reduce various symptoms of anxiety which includes restlessness, uneasiness, cold hands, and feet, etc.

  • Treats Insomnia – The anti-stress and anxiolytic properties of ashwagandha help in calming the mind and body. It helps the mind to get rid of distraught thoughts, reduces mental fatigue and improves sleeping patterns.

  • It manages cortisol levels – Cortisol is a stress hormone that is released when the body is under a lot of stress or has a low blood sugar level. This can also lead to increased fat storage in the body, which can impact our body weight too. However, studies have shown that ashwagandha has the ability to reduce cortisol levels and manage it efficiently.

Small studies have found that, compared to a placebo, ashwagandha significantly improved participants’ reaction times during cognition and psychomotor tests (which measure the ability to respond to instructions and perform an indicated action.


  • Improve thyroid health – The thyroid is an organ located at the back of your neck. Before talking about how ashwagandha can cure thyroid, it is important to understand the different types of thyroid disorders. Hypothyroidism is a thyroid disorder characterized by low levels of thyroid hormone, whereas on the contrary, hyperthyroidism is linked to high levels. By boosting T3 and T4 thyroid hormone levels, Ashwagandha may play a role in managing hypothyroidism but worsen symptoms of hyperthyroidism. Hence, it is advised to consult a doctor before taking ashwagandha for treating thyroid-related disorders.

  • It may be effective against cancer- As is known, ashwagandha is known for its medicinal properties. That said, study has suggested that it may eradicate the growth of cancer cells.

    According to many animal studies, ashwagandha contains a component known as withaferin that helps induce apoptosis, conditioned to destroy cancer cells. The chemical compound initially promotes the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) inside cancer cells, preventing them from functioning. Then, it lets apoptosis take charge and eradicate the harmful cancer cells.
