What is Arjuna?

Arjuna or Terminalia Arjuna is evergreen tree found in India. It is primarily used for its bark unlike other terminalia species which are used for heir fruits. The Arjuna bark is also a powerful antioxidant, it strengthens the skin barrier, and encourages sebum production so as to reduce the signs of dry skin and protect the skin from other external challenges. Arjun is name of the tree and chaal is its bark which has medicinal properties. Arjun chaal finds its mention in Ayurvedic texts since the vedic period and is known to target and cure ailments of many human organs. Some of them include Hridaya (i.e. heart problems), Deepana (enhances stomach fire), Pachana (helps in digestion), Rochana (stimulates appetite), Anulomana (improves breathing), Mutrakrichra (i.e. dysuria), Anaha (i.e. bloating), Mutraghata (i.e. urinary obstruction), Kusthohara (treats skin disease), Shothahara (reduces inflammation). This magic remedy s mentioned in ancient Indian texts such as Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Astang Hridayam.  Arjun Chall or stem bark can be used for its antidysenteric, antipyretic, astringent, cardiotonic, and lithotriptic effects. The arjun chaal powder or bark powder has diuretic effects and is used to treat hepatic cirrhosis and hypertension. The extract of the bark has been used to treat sores, ulcers, and scorpion stings, and to lower blood glucose. Arjuna is a potential cardioprotective agent and its chaal has been used as a remedy for heart ailments.  Other than as a cardiovascular remedy, its bark decoction is being used in the Indian subcontinent for anginal pain, hypertension, congestive heart failure, and dyslipidemia for thousands of years by ancient physicians.

In the Ayurvedic texts of Ashtanga Hridaya, Vagbhata introduces arjuna as a potent remedy for treating wounds, improving cardiac functioning and preventing haemorrhages and ulcers.

 How to use Arjun Chaal powder?

  1. Take 2-3 gm of Arjuna Chaal (bark) churna or as directed by the Physician. Add honey or water and take after lunch and dinner or as advised by the physician.

  2. Take 3 to 6 grams of Arjuna chaal powder, boil it in 100ml water for 20 to 30 minutes or till the liquid has reached to half the quantity. Consume this drink daily in an empty stomach (before food).

What are the benefits of using Arjun Chaal powder?

  • It is extremely pivotal in both high and low blood pressure conditions. By improving the heart functions, it enhances cardiovascular endurance which brings the blood pressure to a stable level and maintains balanced readings. Arjuna helps to maintain normal heart rate when it is taken as decoction because as per Ayurveda it has Hrdya (cardiac tonic) property which helps to give strength to heart muscles and regulate heart rate.

  • It has a cooling influence on the physiology, and pacifies both Pitta and Kapha doshas. Pitta and Kapha skin concerns like acne or pigmentation can be treated with the help of skincare that contains Arjuna Bark.

  • The traditional formulation promotes the healthy functioning of the kidneys by aiding in the excretion of excess uric acid and upholding proper uric acid level in the kidneys, thereby preventing or treating gout. The anti-lithiasis property of this decoction prevents the formation of kidney stones, helps to break or reduce the size of the formed ones and thus prevents various underlying health conditions like polycystic kidney disease, kidney stones, and cystitis.

  • Arjuna controls cough, releases mucus, clears air passages, thus allowing the patient to breathe freely. This is because Arjuna has Kapha balancing properties which helps to remove excessive cough and gives relief to the symptoms of cough.

  • Arjuna tree helps to reduce the risk of bleeding disorders like menorrhagia. According to Ayurveda heavy menstrual bleeding is known as Raktapradar (excessive secretion of menstrual blood). This is due to an aggravated Pitta dosha in the body. Arjuna chaal (bark) helps control heavy menstrual bleeding by balancing Pitta dosha. 

  • This powerful concoction obtained from arjuna bark and other aromatic herbs play a crucial role in improving male fertility.  The powerful spermatogenic properties that are extremely beneficial for treating oligospermia (i.e. low sperm count), asthenozoospermia (i.e. sperm motility), and enhances spermatogenesis (i.e. sperm production). The tonic, being a natural antioxidant improves the production of male hormones like testosterone and luteinizing hormone and treats conditions like erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation. It also boosts male stamina and libido.

  • Arjuna is helpful in the treatment of bleeding piles because of its Kashaya (astringent) property. Arjuna is also useful to get relief from pain while passing stools. This is because of its Sita (cold) nature.
